As Marus exited the Harbinger Building and walked out into the night, he noticed the black SUV at the corner and again when he looked back after turning onto his street. He no longer suspected Ballo behind the black glass. Whoever was watching him was far more dangerous than a detective.

Marus watched as the SUV pulled up behind a small car parked at the other end of the road. The streetlamp beside it illuminated the windshield, revealing the silhouette of the driver. The driver killed the headlights.

Another car slowed and pulled up to the curb in front of his building. Marus recognized the man who got out, a neighbor, and some of his friends. Their presence instilled new confidence in Marus, who left the building’s entry and started toward the SUV. As he moved closer, he could see the man’s dark jacket, his neck and chin. It wasn’t Ballo; the man was white and thick necked. The stature of a bouncer. An enforcer.

Marus looked up at the corner of the building for its unblinking eye, though it didn’t provide the reassurance it once did. If the man in the vehicle had ties to the State, it didn’t matter what the cameras caught on tape. Turning to make sure the small crowd was still at the curb and within earshot, he retrieved his phone and turned on his own camera. He could see the man move in the driver’s seat, perhaps questioning what to do next. Marus advanced, steadying the camera. The SUV’s headlights came on, briefly blinding him. He was five feet away when the vehicle reversed out of its parking space. The man had put on a pair of sunglasses and turned to face Marus as he drove away.

Marus’s hands were trembling. He could hear his heart thudding hard against his chest as he walked back toward the building. And then he heard footsteps. Before he could turn to look, a hand grabbed his arm. He wheeled around, ready to swing, when he saw Roz Roth, a beacon of color against the night sky in her red petticoat.

“I need to talk to you,” she said. Her nose was pink, and her breath heavy. She looked over her shoulder to the empty space at the curb where the SUV had been. “It’s about the sleep clock. Can we go up to your apartment? It’ll take five minutes.”
